Fire-treated Timber Cladding Fire-treated timber cladding, offers enhanced safety while retaining the natural beauty and warmth of timber - offering the perfect solution for customers who want natural materials that meet fire performance standards. Suitable for both internal and external use, fire-treated cladding helps to slow the spread of flames, reduces heat release and lowers smoke production, providing valuable time in an emergency. In the UK, fire-treaded timber is classified using the Euroclass system, BS EN 13501-1, which assesses the reaction of fire to construction products and building materials. The best rating achievable for timber is B-s1, d0 - B denotes the combustibility rating (scale: A-F), s denotes the smoke production rating (scale: 1-3), and d denotes the flaming droplet production rating (scale: 0-2) - This means B-s1, d0 rated timber is one of the highest achievable fire safety ratings for timber products, with minimal smoke and no burning debris. No liability is accepted for reliance on this information. Always verify with official testing data and consult relevant authorities for projectspecific compliance. Fire-treated timber achieves its performance through chemical barriers that slow ignition and flame spread. The most durable and reliable method is pressure impregnation which is especially designed for cladding and structural use.

BS EN 13501-1 plays a critical role in UK Building Regulations, providing a precise method of classifying materials based on how they behave when exposed to fire - including tests for ignitability, flame spread, heat release, smoke production and flaming droplets production. The classification helps designers, specifiers and contractors select appropriate materials for different risk areas, such as corridors, escape routes or external walls. Painted Timber Cladding Our painted timber cladding is designed to deliver a high-quality, long-lasting finish, combining carefully engineered profiles with stable timber substrates and advanced coating systems. All profiles are manufactured with eased edges, incorporating a minimum 3mm radius on all corners. This is essential for coating performance, as most finishes will not adhere effectively to sharp edges. The result is improved coating adhesion, durability, and a more consistent finish across the façade. The performance of any painted cladding system begins with the substrate. At Brookridge, we specify dimensionally stable timbers to ensure long-term coating performance. Our primary substrates include: Through thermal or acetylation processes, these timbers are modified to significantly reduce movement caused by moisture changes. This reduces the risk of swelling, shrinkage, and surface cracking — all key factors in maintaining coating integrity. Factory-Applied Coating Systems At Brookridge, we partner with Remmers, a globally recognised manufacturer specialising in advanced wood protection and coating systems for the construction industry. With over 60 years of expertise, Remmers is known for developing high-performance, water-based coating technologies that combine durability with environmental responsibility. Remmers coating systems are specifically engineered for external timber cladding, offering a balance between protection, appearance, and long-term performance. All coatings are applied under controlled factory conditions to ensure a consistent, high-quality finish across every board. This allows timber moisture content, temperature, humidity, film build and coverage to be carefully managed — delivering a level of consistency and protection that cannot be achieved with on-site application. The result is a high-performance coating system that not only enhances the appearance of timber cladding but also significantly improves its long-term durability and maintenance profile. Key benefits include: • Advanced UV protection • Long-term weather resistance • Microporous, breathable systems • Excellent adhesion and flexibility • Low maintenance performance • Wide design flexibility 18 www.uktimbercladding.com

20 www.uktimbercladding.com A fastener must secure the cladding board firmly in position and provide adequate penetration into the support batten, ensuring structural safety, durability and performance - especially so, given the claddings exposure to wind, moisture, and thermal movement. Eurocode 5 (EN 1995) provides guidance for fixing timber cladding to timber battens - in the diagram below, we detail the requirements for a situation of probable peak wind loads, up to 1.2 or 2.5kN/m2. Other general guidance on fixings - Fixings must be stainless steel - suggest grade 304 - Ring shank nails are recommended with a minimum diameter of 2.3mm - Screws recommended with a minimum diameter 4.0mm - All fixings should fit flush with the cladding face and not puncture the surface - For most species, a head twice the size of the diameter of the fixing is suggested Key T = cladding thickness PEN = penetration depth into batten LP = nominal length of fastener point L = total fastener length Penetration (PEN) should be a minimum of 19mm. Normal length of fastening point (LP) should be 5mm for nails and 10mm for screws. To calculate the total fastener length, please use the following equation: T + PEN + LP = L (total fastener length) LP L PEN Treated Timber Batten Cladding Board (T) Help & Guidance Nail and screw sizing, and cladding boards to batten

Where timber battens are used to fix timber cladding, there are usually two situations. 1. When installed over a timber frame structure, they are normally fixed into the solid timber studs through the breather membrane and sheathing board, using a maximum of 600mm centres for vertical battens and 400mm centres for horizontal battens. 2. Where the battens are fixed to a masonry structure, they are normally fixed at a maximum of 600mm centres vertically, and 400mm centres horizontally. A damp proof course may be specified between the timber batten and the masonry structure. Depending on the imposed load of the timber cladding to be fixed to the batten and the likely wind loadings, a structural engineer may need to determine the exact fixing specification. Additionally, the size of the batten will be determined by the fixing required in the cladding board and the size of the cavity required which should never be less than 19mm. The battens used in the backing structure should never exceed 600mm spacing and limiting the centres will restrain the natural tendency for the cladding boards to twist, bow or cup. Horizontal cladding boards can be fixed to vertical battens and these will not restrict drainage or air flow. Vertical boards will need to be fixed to a horizontal counter batten to allow drainage and air flow, as long as the horizontal battens are omitted from the top and bottom of the cladding. The horizontal counter batten spacing depends on the wind load and needs to be closer together than is often assumed, anywhere between 200 - 400mm. Help & Guidance Pressure-treated batten for backing structure 21 Brookridge - the essential guide to timber cladding

You will require regularised, pressure-treated batten to create a ventilated backing structure for your timber cladding. Depending on your specific building design, we offer a range of sizes to complete your project which we can deliver with your timber cladding. Our pressure-treated batten is machined and pressure treated in-house (in accordance with BS 8417) and provides the highest quality batten to compliment your cladding project. Battens are also available fire treated to Euroclass B, if required. Where cladding boards are flame retardant treated, the battens should be fire treated to at least the same standard. 23 Our range of untreated and pressure-treated timber cladding will require time to acclimatise when it reaches site - before it is fixed, it must reach an equilibrium moisture content with the surrounding air. Our untreated timber cladding will arrive on site fully wrapped - it is important that the wrapping from the ends and sides of the pack is removed immediately to allow good air flow. If storing outside, leaving the top of the packing on will give some protection from the elements and still allow air flow around the pack. Our treated timber cladding, unless in racks, will arrive on site unwrapped. The cladding should be protected from direct sunlight, water saturation, snow, ice, dirt or other elements, and it should be stored off the ground, on bearers, with a vapour barrier so that moisture is not absorbed through the bottom boards of the pack. The cladding should, ideally, be stored in a well ventilated, dry location. The acclimatisation process can be speeded up by sticking every layer of the pack(s) with vertically aligned sticks - it is important sticks are kept in line to avoid the cladding boards becoming misshapen. Treated timber cladding should be sticked every two pieces, face to face, so stick marks do not appear on the face during the acclimatisation process. It is important to measure boards prior to installation to check dimensions are fully acclimatised. Do not install boards if they are oversized. On-site cutting end grain on most softwood timber species absorbs water 250 times more rapidly than other wood surfaces, and must therefore be protected. Our pressure-treated timbers that are drilled or cut onsite must be sealed with a concentrated end seal product which is available from Brookridge. For untreated Cedar, Larch and other species we recommend that all ends should be sealed using a cut end preserver also available from Brookridge. Help & Guidance Cladding Installation Tips Brookridge - the essential guide to timber cladding

24 Fixing Brookridge Timber Cladding Timber cladding should be installed on a pressure-treated backing structure, as specified by your designer or architect to allow air flow behind the facade (see document “Support for Timber Cladding” for guidance). Each individual cladding board must be fixed independently to allow boards to move without affecting other boards. Boards over 100mm in width should not be secret fixed Timber cladding should be fixed so vegetation does not come into contact with it Timber cladding should be installed a minimum of 200mm above ground level Detailing and flashing must direct water away from the building Fixings must be stainless steel suggest grade 304 Fixings must have a flat head which, when installed, should fit flush with the face of the timber cladding. Do not use lost or small head fixings If using screws, pre-drilling is recommended If using nails, annular ring shank are recommended All fixings should be at least 20mm from the end of the board and 15mm from the edge Any fixings towards the end of the boards should be pre-drilled When fixing, leave gaps between boards and the perimeter of the facade to allow for expansion www.uktimbercladding.com This information is general advice and not intended as a comprehensive guide.
